The dynamics of business always put in front of new entrepreneurs a series of obstacles - or challenges if you will - that are not always easy to overcome. One of those obvious obstacles is usually the money to start.Yes, starting a business often demands a lot of startup capital and let us face it, not everyone can afford to risk their life savings on a business venture that, as such, is never free of risks and success is nothing but certain. Therefore, the best way to do business if you are not rich and have little or no money to spare, is to seek for ways to start small, and from there build up your financial freedom. Now, how can you start a small business that will enable you to have a steady income from which you can make a living fast?Well, for starters, you must change the way you envision a business. Forget about locations, employees and complicated operations, and start thinking about simplicity, flexibility and profitability. It sounds good, and it does for one reason: it is good. Approaching the idea of a business differently, through a non-traditional business model, can mean the difference between wasting a lot of time -and money- and doing a lot with very little, but most importantly, ...

As a business owner, one of your concerns should be what you can do to make the service in your area better for the people of that community. If the location is convenient to the customers, and they are pleased with the quality of your work, they will become your loyal customer and they will refer others to you.Prior to selecting the location, you should find out how many businesses like yours are located in the community, and do some research to determine what the market is like for those businesses. Based on the research, do you know whether or not there is a need for your service or product? This information is critical because you do not want to set up a business on the same block with three similar businesses. When attracting customers to the business, you may need to offer them something special or unique to distinguish your service from the ones offered by your competitors. Maybe you need additional parking to attract customers and if so, then make plans for it. For a copying service, for example, you could keep the business open for 24 hours, making it convenient for the customers. You might want to give first-time customers a discount to try out your service. You could also ...

When I work with business owners I always ask them where their customers come from. The number one response to my question is:"Most of our business comes from word of mouth."Call me a skeptic but I don't believe it.Over 90% of the people I work with tell me this. It's consistent across all types of businesses and all stages of businesses. It doesn't matter whether they're a new business or an old business. They could be profitable or struggling. They almost all say the same thing. This leads me to believe that some people are living in fantasyland when it comes to their marketing. This can be a dangerous place to live when you're trying to build a successful business.I think the reason I hear this so much is because it's what people want to believe. We all want to think our service or reputation or product is so great that people will line up at our door. It's the old "if you build it they will come" idea. But it's not true. In most businesses, no matter how great you "build it" they will not come. At least they won't come to you until they know about you. That's where effective marketing comes in.Sure, word of mouth is a desirable way to get new customers. ...

Story.Story is so important to word of mouth advertising that we are devoting several articles to it. Story is vital for small business marketing. You want--you need--to have your customers pass on the essence of your brand for you to succeed.Earlier we discussed the concept of “sweet somethings”--little phrases which describe your brand. You can tactically place these all about your business to reinforce what you stand for to your customers and prospects. The use of these whispered reminders of what your small business does for its customers will remain critical for your marketing, whether or not you try and move on to the next step--the use of story. The relationship is similar to a newspaper headline and the accompanying story…the headline is important, because it snags our attention and draws us in. The story is important, because it keeps us interacting with the paper and scanning those ads. The more we are involved with the paper, the more likely we’ll continue our subscription. However, the extent you can use story to actively build your brand depends on the type of small business you are in. The greater the emotional involvement your product or service plays in the life of your customer, the better your chances for your small business to be able to ...

Most people running small businesses admit that they can have a fairly inconsistent approach to marketing. It gets done when they have time or when sales are down and this creates a feast or famine situation - you're either doing well or you're scratching around for business. So what can you do if you're a small business without a dedicated Marketing team?Well, the answer is to systemise your marketing and even your sales process. This isn't as complicated as you might think. I'm guessing that you have certain sales and marketing activities which aren't really unique. For example someone visits your website and is interested in getting more information so they send an email to the address on your 'contact us' page. Either you or one of your staff has to reply to the email attaching a brochure and then remember to follow up with them to find out whether they are likely to buy from you. If they do decide to buy then you'll have to process the sale and if they don't decide to buy on this occasion someone has to remember to contact them again at a later date. This could all be automated. The bottom line is that if you do any marketing activity more than once you can probably automate ...

Let's start by asking a simple question, "do I need a website?" Absolutely, positively, yes! At the very least, you need to have a small business website so that customers, prospects, local businesses and organizations can quickly and easily find out more about you. A small business website should be a key component of your marketing strategy.Think about small business marketing this way...You might not see it as important, but to everyone around you, not having a website leaves a big ugly smudge on your credibility, professionalism and willingness to work with customers. What if you didn't own a telephone? It's a rather outrageous idea, but in all seriousness, what if you didn't have a phone or cell phone? How would that impact your small business marketing? Would your customers look at you differently? Would they think less of you for making their lives a nightmare -- just to do business with you? You're darn right they would! And all silliness aside, the same can be said about not having a small business website. But, I'm doing just fine without; why do I need a website as part of my marketing strategy?Your business has done well over the years without a website. You're continuing to grow at a comfortable rate. Your customers are happy ...
