The challenge starts with getting funding, which usually requires a comprehensive business plan. Whether you’re going with a bank, credit union, or private investor, you’ll need to convince them that your idea is worth their time and money—and with so many others trying to make their mark, it’s going to take some work. Here’s what should go into your fashion business plan and how you can get your message across.

Executive summary: This is the first section of your business plan, but it should be written last. The main purpose of an executive summary is to give an overview of your business, explaining all your main points in a few pages. Remember, your reader won’t necessarily be in the fashion industry, so write for a general audience and keep the jargon to a minimum.

Concept and market details: The actual business plan starts with an overall concept. What sets your fashion business apart from the competition? Do you cater to a specific audience or focus on a specific type of fashion? Who will your main clients be? Make sure you can back your claims with facts and figures from reliable sources, such as government agencies, universities, and business groups.

Market research: Next, give an overview of the market you’re entering, including your main competitors and how you plan to stand out. If you’re selling women’s clothing, what can you offer than no one else has? Maybe you’re catering to a specific sub-group, such as petite women, or a style that isn’t readily available, such as 70s fashion. Also include possible setbacks and how you can overcome them.

Methods and logistics: Investors will also want a step-by-step plan to making profits, from designing your store to launching your ad campaign. It also includes a detailed financial breakdown. At every step, make sure to factor in the costs, so the investor will know where you stand financially at any given point. Focus on solid steps (e.g. print out brochures, schedule seasonal sales) and explain how they will help your bottom line.

Profit projections: Numbers are the most important thing in a business plan. Offer estimates on startup costs, such as setting up the place and buying your first raw materials, as well as operating costs, including rent, staff wages, and marketing. Then give an estimate of your initial profit and how long it will take to earn it. Be realistic in your figures, and show your calculations whenever possible.

If there’s one thing business owners can agree on, it’s that there’s always room for more sales. How to get them, however, is a bit less clear—entrepreneurs don’t always agree on the best ways to get people to buy. Tim Berry, president of Palo Alto Software, says that a better business plan may be the secret.

While entrepreneurs are engrossed in building the business, things such as market conditions and customer preferences may change, according to Mr. Berry. That’s why it’s important to take an occasional step back and look at the business from a wider perspective, he says.

There are several ways to do this—talking to individual customers (over lunch, even), doing an Internet search, or taking classes or workshops to bring a new angle into the way one runs business. The point, Mr. Berry says, is to work new initiatives into the business plan, with concrete steps and tangible goals.

In an article for The Entrepreneur, Mr. Berry offered a four-step guide to reworking one’s business plan and eventually increasing sales. First, he said, entrepreneurs should focus more on selling to existing customers rather than new ones. The example he gave was that of a computer store that called previous customers to remind them to upgrade their systems and offering special deals—at the same time clearing old stock and reinforcing good customer relations.

Next, Mr. Berry suggests rethinking pricing. It isn’t so much about how high or low they are, but how it fits with image and marketing, he says. Some people shy away from cheap products because they associate it with low quality, so lowering price may not always be a positive move.

The third step takes off on a related note: reviewing marketing messages, from content to delivery. This can mean using emerging channels such as social media, or reviving old ones such as email marketing and direct mail. In any case, Mr. Berry says, results must be measured in solid stats such as page views, ranking, or number of shares or retweets.

Finally, business owners must look into nearby markets, either by offering up something new to existing customers or selling existing items to a new demographic. According to Mr. Berry, this is more practical than coming up with a new product or service and finding new people to sell them to as well.

Mr. Berry wrapped up his article with a final tip: put everything in a business plan. This will force business owners to put everything down on paper, keep track of the results of implementation, and follow them up to see if any changes are needed.

Starting a Home Based Business – Two Rules

Rule number 1:

“The biggest mistake people make in life is not making a living at doing what they most enjoy.” – Malcolm S. Forbes

If you really like the internet, enjoy surfing, learning and experimenting online, if you have patience and accept the fact real and legitimate online businesses take some time, then you’re looking in the right place. Since you’re here, and searching for ideas on starting a home based business, you are already on the right track.

Rule number 2:

“Failures don’t plan to fail; they fail to plan” – Harvey MacKay

(If you don’t know about Harvey MacKay, make a note to find out more, and do a search for his books.)

Heard it before? Think it’s too hard and probably doesn’t apply to starting home based business?

Wrong Answer!

More and more people starting a home business are succeeding today than they did even five years ago. This comes from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Why? Because more and more people are using the vast resources the internet has to offer to better plan their business start-ups. So what are the tips for creating a business plan that you will use, and not just stuff in a drawer? Start by writing down your answers to these five questions:

1. Concept – What is the product or service you intend to sell? How will you sell it? What are the different ways you can sell your concept? Who will your customers be and where will you find them?

2. Knowledge and Passion – Do you have an in-depth knowledge about your concept, or is it something you recently became interested in doing? (The next question is more important than the first one here) Is your business concept something you’re PASSIONATE about? If the answer to this is yes, most of the time this makes up for knowledge you may lack. Starting a home business with a concept you are passionate about is essential.

3. Money – This one is clear, but what’s less obvious is how much money will you need? Over what period of time will you need money and at which points during that journey? Many businesses fail because people did a great job calculating the up-front costs, but didn’t look at the money required to keep the business going until it can support itself financially. Starting a home business with-out knowing the long term financial requirement is a failure waiting to happen.

4. Market Research – Is there good potential market for your concept and how much competition exists in that market? If you and three other people love the concept, great! But if it’s hard finding many other people also interested, you should consider exploring other concepts. This requires research.

5. Goals – You need to have “SMART” goals for your business; Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-bound. Heard it before? Sure you have, but this time it’s more important than ever, because this is your future. Take the time and set these goals well. Starting a home based business will be much easier if you get this right from the beginning.

So, where are the tools to put this altogether? The first one is you! No business plan software or business planning tool can help you unless you can first place your thoughts and dreams for your business in writing. It really doesn’t matter what format you follow, just put everything in writing. Once you have everything in your head transformed into written words, then you can use the many software tools available to organize your thoughts, dreams and wishes in to a winning plan.

By: David J Ogden

About the Author:

Creating your cafe’s business plan is a project in and of itself, so make sure you understand what goes into it. These are tips for writing a successful plan for your cafe.

Outline First

Before starting to write any section in full, take a quick sweep through the outline of the entire plan. Jot down everything you know about each section within and highlight where sections pose questions for which you don’t know the answers yet (such as “Who are my competitors?”). You will finish this quick process with a much better grasp of what you know, what you don’t know, how much time will probably be required to find the answers you need, and where you should probably begin.

Make Sure Sources Are Relevant

When finding existing data on the cafe industry or coffee consumption, make sure that sources are clearly relevant to your venture and are from reputable sources. You should feel comfortable proudly display the source of the data in your plan, inviting readers to look into the original document if they choose. Data must be pretty recent to be relevant and must be from experts or organizations who have familiarity with the industry. Also, consider that the average coffee drinking in California may be very different from that of Florida or Alaska. Find data relevant to your geographic location and the demographic of customers you will have.

Would a Graphic or Chart Work?

For every long piece of narrative you write, take a second look at whether the relevant points could be expressed through a chart or graph, or supported with a photo or graphic. For example, logos of competitors or potential partners may jog the memories of readers, give them a better idea of the type of business you are describing, or at least provide some visual interest to their descriptions. A photo of the location you plan for your cafe and its immediate neighbors is another great illustration. Graphs and charts should be well labeled and unambiguous. They must make the plan simpler to read and never more complicated.

By: Eric Powers

About the Author:

The first step in opening a successful restaurant business is writing a comprehensive restaurant business plan. Almost everybody has a rough idea of what basically constitutes a restaurant business plan sample. But there are many things which you need to pay attention to, as most people often miss to include them.

So here’s a head start on crafting your restaurant business sample-

In general there are five things that all restaurant business plans should have. They are Executive Summary, Market Research, History and Position to Date, Operations and Business Strategy.

Speaking about executive summary it should address some vital issues like mission and objective of the company, description of the company, products and services offered, finance requirements as well as financial forecasts. An executive summary is often regarded as the foundation of any business. All the information that you will provide in the plan will be like a guiding path as to what your restaurant will do and how they will do it.

History and position to date is the second vital thing in a business plan sample. This part of the business plan will take you a step further in running your restaurant business. Here you require to include some vital things- such as, the key personnel and the management team of your business, history of your restaurant and also the structure of your restaurant business.

Market research is the most important part of the business plan sample. Efficient market research will only depict how much successful your restaurant business is going to be in the long run. A market research should be inclusive of the following factors – social and economic factors, long-term opportunities, competitive environment, customer description, geographic area, market definition, competitive analysis, market opportunities, competitive advantages and also potential future competition.

The answers that you would get to these things should be analyzed carefully. The information received through market research is invaluable for the success of any business.

Business strategy is another important component of a restaurant business plan sample. Here you should exactly explain how you plan to attract customers to your restaurant. You not only require to attract but also to retain that attraction so as the customers can keep coming back to your restaurant. Thus the topics that should be addressed in this part of the plan are advertising and promotion, incentives or special offers to customers, marketing and sales and commission.

After this comes the fifth most important part of a restaurant business plan sample is Operations. Here you need to explain clearly as to how you will run your business on a daily basis. This part should include things like number of employees you have, type of employees, the daily menu, particular food on a particular day and more. Basically this part of the restaurant business plan should address the daily operations of your restaurant business.

By: Garen Garson

About the Author:

If you are thinking of starting your own business and you tell anyone about it, the first piece of advice is usually “write a business plan.” At this point, you run out and buy a book on writing a business plan or get a piece of planning software and start writing. Having a plan is important, but many businesses are started without a written plan. Any plan you write should have a specific purpose.

Bank Plan: If you plan to borrow money from a bank, they will most definitely require a written plan. Specifically, they want to know how much you will borrow, how you will use the money, what interest rate can you afford, how you will pay it back, and what you plan to do about paying it back if the business fails. The plan written for the bank should focus on allaying any fears the loan officer has about risk. Venture Capital Plan: Basically, this is a marketing document. You are selling the VCs on how brilliant your concept is, how big the market is, and how well you can execute on your plan. Focus on a clear description of your concept, product, or service. Be extremely clear as to who will buy your products/services and why. Carefully examine the competition and show why your product/service outshines theirs. Describe in depth the management experience your senior team has. If they do not have all the appropriate experience necessary, explain where you plan to acquire that expertise. Internal Communications Plan: You may want to communicate your plan with your employees, partners, or even customers. These plans often start with the vision, then mission, followed by company goals and strategic initiatives to meet those goals. You can use this type of plan to help guide your employees in their decision making. This should be considered to be a marketing document as well. Internal Strategy Plan: As you build your business, writing an internal plan will help you think out your future strategies. You can also use this plan to build metrics around certain products that can be measured in the future. This should be as long or as short as you need to describe your ideas and work through your strategy. It can be written out or just a series of steps and metrics within a spreadsheet. Business Concept Plan: If you think you have a great idea, but are a little fuzzy on the details, writing out a plan can give you a good feel as to whether it is viable or not. The key in this case is to focus on the financials. How much will you need to get going? How long until you turn a profit? How fast will the company grow? Will you be able to get capital to sustain that growth? Focus on understanding what will make you successful in this space.

I am not going to rehash the business plan format or how long or short it should be. Just search for “business plan” and you will find 10 gazillion articles on the subject. Before you do that, understand why you want to write a business plan and focus on the important points.

A last caveat, if you are writing a business plan for external consumption (1, 2, or 3), make sure it has been proofed for clarity and grammatical errors. A bad marketing document is worse than no marketing document at all.

By: C. Worrall

About the Author:

Some restaurant owners will focus on a serving a wide variety of fine American cuisine, designed to appeal to a variety of different tastes.

Other restaurant owners will choose to serve a more eclectic mix of cuisines, while others will decide to focus on a smaller niche market. It is important for the restaurant business plan to be prepared to spell out this important distinction.

Getting Your Business Plan Reviewed By Professionals

As the restaurant business plan is being prepared, it is important for the would be restaurant owner to have the document carefully reviewed by a number of business professionals.

It is a good idea, for instance, to have the restaurant business plan reviewed by a qualified business attorney, as well as an accountant or other tax professional.

This professional input can help the business owner structure the restaurant business plan in a way that will make it most effective when it comes to attracting the financing that will be needed to get the new restaurant up and running.

By: Shaunta Pleasant

About the Author:

First – stop thinking like a business owner. I know, you might think this is odd. However, the reason most business owners don’t write a business plan is because they are too close to their challenges and can’t decide what they need to do. Stepping out of character will help you see the big picture and the little details so you can focus on what to do.

Since this was written during championship football season, I want you to assume the role of a winning college or professional sports coach. It doesn’t matter if you are a woman or a man for this job. The goal will be the same. You will want to prepare your team to win the championship game by as many points as possible. If you have trouble with football, pick any team sport and the concept will work. The idea is to get into the character of a winning coach to help you create a plan.

Think like 60 Minutes is all You Have

A football game is divided up like a business year. There are four quarters and two minute warnings you must plan for. You will need plays and actions for kicking things off, receiving special team opportunities and think offense and defense to win.

Understand You and Your Opponent

Winning coaches invest time to research opponents and you need to determine both your strengths and weaknesses. If you don’t take time for this, you will get clobbered by the other teams. Use this research and analysis to formulate your complete game strategies and special plays.

Plan For Special Plays

Every team will need specials plays to kick off, receive, punt, and defend the red zone and two minute warning. These are special opportunities you have in the year from new equipment, vendor specials, trade shows or open houses you can plan for.

The Offensive Game Plays

You will need a list of offensive running and passing plays to execute during the game. These are easy to think about and you must plan for them.

Action plans to start a new business relationship and move forward. Actions to build a stronger customer base. Actions to generate referrals for new clients from existing ones. Open house and networking actions you will execute for new business.

The Defensive Plays

You will need a list of defensive plays that protect your accounts and seize opportunities. These could include a blitz or a pass rush that capitalizes on an opportunity.

Action plans that develop satisfied clients and builds strong relationships. Surveys that will help determine if you have new opportunities or lost business. Monitor and track competitive actions that may impact your current business. If you can, have contingency plans for injuries, bad calls and penalties in the game.

I hope you see the advantage of planning from a different perspective to make your sales plan fun and much easier to write. Your business plan doesn’t have to be 20 pages long. You need a single sheet that covers the actions you will take to win the game in your business. When you finish writing your business plan, it should be on a 12 month calendar with goals and objectives for each quarter.

A complete game plan makes it easier to adjust actions during the game and in your case, the business year so you can motivate your team throughout the year. If you need help with your plan, I suggest you take time to watch a championship game. Think of it as research. You will be done with your sales plan sooner than you think and it will be fun.

By: Steve Martinez

About the Author:

Are you considering starting up a business? If so, have you started writing your business plan yet? If so, have you thought about how you are going to go about it or what you should include in it? If you are unfamiliar with business plans, particularly what they include, you should carefully take the time to research what is commonly found in a business plan. Doing so will may make it easier for you to find the motivation to get going and ultimately come up with a plan that will fit your needs.

Here are some of the key points to include in your business plan.

What Your Business Is All About

Your starting point is the type of business you are interested in setting up. For example, are you interested in starting a retail store, an online store, or a cleaning service? Explain why you feel you will be a success in that sector and provide detail on how exactly the business will operate. Here you will also outline the products or services you plan on selling, and at the same time describe what makes them unique compared to what the competition is selling.

Where Are You Based?

The next point to cover is where your business will be located. If you are planning on starting an internet business then that’s very simple – your home is probably the answer! If you are planning on running a more traditional business then describe where you are planning to base yourself. Is your premises going to be leased, rented or owned?

Carefully consider the pros and cons of each of these options and clearly state in your plan why you have chosen the route you have.

Will You Be Working Alone?

The reader of the plan needs to know who will you be running your business; is it you or will you hire someone else to run it for you? Naturally you will be the backbone of the business but if you are hiring staff it’s good for the reader to know the number and quality of the staff you will be hiring. It is these people who have the ability to make or break your business. But there is also a cost consideration – if you have to buy in the very best people what pressure will this put on the business?

Where’s Your Market?

In addition to your business expenses, it is also important to focus on how you plan on generating income for your business. That is why your business plan should include details of your advertising and marketing strategy; in other words how you are going to reach your target audience. Your target audience is the type of person or company who you think is most likely to become a client or a customer of yours. In the plan outline what they look like. What are their needs or wants and how do you plan to satisfy them?

Who are You Competing Against?

Ignore your competitors at your peril, both in real life and when writing your business plan. Addressing the competitive threat is extremely important, especially if you are planning on using your business plan to obtain financing; your bankers will be well aware of who your competitors are, so don’t try to pretend they don’t exist!

Financial lenders and investors will want to make sure that your business will be a success and that success can depend on the strength or otherwise of the competition. That is why it is advisable you obtain an accurate count of businesses in your area that are offering the same products or services as you are, as well as the prices that those products and services are being offered at.

The above mentioned points are just a few of the many areas you will want to cover when writing your business plan. You will find a complete guide in my e-book ‘The Secrets of Writing a Killer Business Plan’ available at http://www.smallbusinesssuccess.biz/writing_business_plan.htm

Even if you are not planning to obtain finance for your start up business think carefully about writing a business plan – it is well worth the effort to invest your time.

By: Robert Warlow

About the Author:

Once you have decided to go ahead and open a small restaurant you will need to write a business plan. A business plan is a report where you compile all your research findings to try and prove that you idea is viable and that your goals are realistic. It will be an extremely useful document to you, as the owner, and may be essential if you have to convince lenders, partners or investors. Below are some of the things that you should consider including in a business plan for starting a small restaurant business.

1) Executive Summary – Let readers know what you will be talking about in the report, tell them about your personal background and reasons for wanting to get into the business. You should also briefly outline your restaurant concept.

2) Mission Statement – Write down what you hope to achieve with your business. Set out a company philosophy and values and think about how you want to fit into the local community.

3) Goals – Set out some ways that your progress and success can be measured and then set some goals on a monthly basis for a three year period.

4) Ownership and Management Structure – Describe how ownership of the restaurant is divided among the various owners or investors if any and set out a management structure showing who is responsible for decisions. Set out a plan for hiring employees as the restaurant gets busier.

5) Start-up Costs and Requirements – List out everything that is needed to get the restaurant to the point where the doors are open for business. Don’t forget to include an allowance for unforeseen expenses.

6) Funding – Discuss how the startup phase will be funded and the sources of funds available.

7) Location – Examine several possible locations for the restaurant and provide your reasoning as to why you would select one above the others.

Competitive Analysis – Include details of all major competitors in the area. Look for opportunities in the market that are not being catered to by these other restaurants and propose a way to meet this market demand. Outline how you plan to distinguish your restaurant from other market players.

9) Marketing Plan – Identify your target market and discuss how you can create a dining experience to suit their tastes. Write about the brand that you want to develop, discuss menu pricing and set out some ways that you intend to advertise and promote the restaurant.

10) Financial Analysis – Set out a spreadsheet showing expected monthly income and expenses and work out how much profit you can expect over the first three years. Run some optimistic and pessimistic scenarios as well to get an idea of your profit potential if things go better or worse than you originally expected.

You can also attach an appendix to the report with photocopies of any supporting documents that you feel support your case.

A solid business plan can help you start your restaurant off right, avoid mistakes and keep you heading in the direction that you need to be in order to achieve your goals.

By: Patrick Sutherland

About the Author:
